How can I trust the quality of products sold on Second Skin?
Answered by Anastasia, Founder of Second Skin
Before launching Second Skin, I spent a significant amount of time researching and testing how beauty resale could work safely and responsibly. I knew that without our customers' trust, Second Skin simply wouldn't exist.
That research led to one clear conclusion: beauty resale needed a consignment model backed by robust, non-negotiable resale criteria.
That's why Second Skin acts as the middle layer between our sellers and shoppers, ensuring every product meets the same standard — ours.
Sellers are required to disclose whether a product has been opened and, if so, when. Every product is then individually inspected by our team to determine whether it meets our Beauty Resale Criteria.
Once accepted, we handle the entire listing process, including photographing the exact product you'll receive. We also store every product ourselves until it's sold or its listing period ends.
No stock photos, no surprises. What you see is exactly what you get.
How do I know the products aren't expired?
Every product is checked for expiry before being approved for resale.
Our team carries out a shelf-life inspection on every product, checking its batch code, manufacturing date or expiry date to ensure it hasn't expired and has sufficient shelf life remaining.
For eligible opened products, sellers must disclose when the product was first opened. We use this information to check that it's still within its Period After Opening (PAO) - the recommended timeframe a product can be used after opening.
Products that are expired, outside their PAO, don't have sufficient shelf life remaining, or lack the information needed to verify their shelf life simply won't be accepted for resale.
Are products like used mascara or used lipstick sold on Second Skin?
Absolutely not!
While we do accept certain lightly used beauty products, this depends on the type of product and whether its packaging allows it to be hygienically resold.
Products that involve direct contact during application, or have packaging that exposes the contents to fingers or applicators, have stricter requirements.
Products we don't accept once they've been used, even just once, include:
- Direct-application products — such as mascara, lip gloss, concealer and nail polish
- Open-jar products — such as moisturisers and cleansing balms
- Cream and powder makeup — such as lipstick, cream blush and eyeshadow palettes
On the other hand, certain products in more hygienic packaging, such as pumps, tubes and sprays, may be accepted when lightly used, provided they meet our minimum fullness requirements and all other resale criteria.
